INFRANGIBLE MATTER; TRACING THE ELEMENTS

Group exhibition @ Art Space on The Concourse (Sydney, Australia)

The exhibition, Infrangible Matter; Tracing the Elements is inspired by the five elements or agents within traditional Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean cultures. The elements of Fire, Water, Wood, Metal and Earth inform cosmic cycles, the interior of the body and the natural world.

In Chinese traditional culture these five elements are called “Wǔxíng”; in Korean culture they are referred to as “O Haeng” and in Vietnamese as “Ngũ Hành”. Variations of these elements appear in the cultural heritages from across the globe, including Japanese “Godai”, Hinduism and Greek Mythology.

Infrangible Matter; Tracing the Elements explores a variation of the five Sinosphere elements; focusing on Fire, Water, Air, Metal and Earth from a cross-cultural perspective. It examines these five elements in the context of contemporary arts practice. Artists in the exhibition draw from a variety of cultural roots to offer conceptual and poetic interpretations of the elements and how they can reflect deeper themes. Fire, Water, Air, Metal and Earth become agents to address current reflections on colonisation, the environment, migration, personal ritual and more.

ARTISTS: Min-Woo Bang, Cindy Yuen-Zhe Chen, Thomas C. Chung, Charlotte Foster, Pamela Leung, Ganbold Lundaa, Quan Zhu Ma, Pamela See, James Tylor and Hirofumi Uchino.

MERRI-BEK SUMMER SHOW 2024: (BE)LONGING

Group exhibition @ Counihan Gallery (Melbourne, Australia)

The Merri-bek Summer Show is our much anticipated annual celebration of local artists.

This year’s exhibition theme (Be)Longing is centred around the idea to long for something which evokes a feeling of desire, yearning or nostalgia. Artists were invited to respond, examine and consider the complexities that arise when our sense of belonging is disrupted or challenged, leading to feelings of longing. Conversely, this interpretation could also mean an exploration of how longing can shape our sense of identity and community, and our sense of what it means to belong.

The Counihan Gallery is pleased to present the 8th Noel Counihan Commemorative Art Award. The Award celebrates an artist whose work explores the exhibition theme and engages with social, political, or environmental ideas. All exhibitors in the Merri-bek Summer Show are eligible for the Award. The Award recipient will receive $3000 towards their professional development. This prize is generously sponsored by Merri-bek City Council.

The ‘Climate for Change Award’, celebrates an artist who champions environmental justice and activates for a greener future. The ‘Climate for Change Award’ recipient receives a $500 CERES voucher.

Voting will open soon for the People’s Choice Award. The artist with the most votes will receive a cash prize of $1000, generously sponsored by the Sydney Road Brunswick Association.

NELIMARKKA MUSEUM

International artist's residency @ Nelimarkka Museo (Alajärvi, Finland)

The Nelimarkka Museum in Alajärvi was founded by the painter and professor Eero Nelimarkka (1891-1977) in 1964. The building was designed by his friend, the architect Hilding Ekelund. Since 1995 it has functioned as the Regional Art Museum of Southern Ostrobothnia.

The completion of his own museum building in the countryside of Southern Ostrobothnia was the fulfillment of Eero Nelimarkka’s dreams. Nelimarkka’s decision to locate the museum in Alajärvi aroused astonishment, but he believed that art belonged equally to everyone. He especially felt that the people living far from Helsinki, particularly the people in the region of Southern Ostrobothnia, had been left without a chance to discover art.

The idea of founding an art institution was first born as early as the 1910s, as Nelimarkka joked to his friend, architecture student Hilding Ekelund, “If I ever build a house, you will design it”. Eero Nelimarkka’s main goals for his museum were the internationalization of art and the promotion of art education. The Museum building was to serve as an exhibition space and art school.

After the wars, Nelimarkka could afford to fund his own Foundation thanks to his financial success in selling his artwork. The Nelimarkka Foundation was established in 1945 to “assist and support Christian educational work and increase the foundation’s art collection”. Originally, the artist planned to place the art collections of the art school and Foundation in the summer villa he built in Alajärvi, but the villa turned out to be too small. In 1961, the Nelimarkka Foundation bought the main farm of the Nelimarkka family with its buildings near the villa. The following year, the artist placed the Foundation’s collections in the farm’s residential building and began running an art course there.

Since the mid-1980s the museum has also run an international residency program for artists. In the summertime you can enjoy coffee and cake in the light atmosphere of the museum’s: “Café de Nelimarkka”. The museum shop is open year-round. You can book a customized tour or a workshop at the museum. The Nelimarkka museum maintains as well the nearby Villa Nelimarkka and Villa Väinölä, located in the centre of Alajärvi. Villa Väinölä, designed by Alvar Aalto, also hosts Nelimarkka’s artist residency programme and a programme of regional art exhibitions.

Museum services include school and group tours, events and workshops.

Today, the Nelimarkka Museum also serves as the regional art museum in South Ostrobothnia. In addition to exhibiting Eero Nelimarkka’s artworks, the museum mainly displays contemporary art by Finnish and foreign artists.

AARK (Archipelago Art Residency in Korpo)

International artist's residency @ AARK (Korpo, Finland)

The AARK (Archipelago Art Residency in Korpo) is located right by the sea in a small apartment building from the sixties. It is close to the ferry that operates between the islands Korpo and Nauvo and is easily accessible by public transport.

Korpo is an island in the middle of the Turku Archipelago, located in S/W of Finland behind 2 ferries and about 1.45 hours by bus from Turku.

Our environment is a unique archipelago. With the National Parks and the Archipelago Sea Biosphere Reserve, frozen seas, light summer nights, rich birdlife as well as amazing star nights – this place has something to offer around the year: Outer archipelago or the nearby wild forest lake, the seaside is straight outside AARK, passing ships.

AARK can offer a quiet retreat as well as a more social setting depending on the artist’s needs and other art professionals visiting. We organize a weekly informal meeting in the residency. Travel and working plans, questions, dinners and sauna … or just some coffee together.

Our location is by the ferry shore and a small boats dock so there is always some traffic and people around. But at the same time, the house and the archipelago can be very silent during winter months, a perfect environment to focus on your practice.

We encourage a dialog inside AARK, between both national and international quests and a dialog with local people and the environment.

“THE SEA THAT STANDS BEFORE ME…”

Solo exhibition @ Chinese European Art Center (Xiamen, China)

Faced with hope or despair, humanity often navigates the unknown in life to find what it desires. In their quest for something more, they leave behind the comforts of what was once familiar. Nothing is assured when venturing into the open waters.

“The Sea That Stands Before Me…”, is an exhibition contemplating the notion of one’s devotion to living as a form of armament. My conceptual practice continues its inquiries into psychology, folklore, mythology, and philosophy, binding them as a cohesive tale.

How do we find one’s dreams if all seems lost? Can we rise from sorrow to feel worthy of embracing life again? These are the questions posed in the form of digital video landscapes, 3D-printed sculptures, and neon lights.

The experience of dreaming is one of the most universal of human experiences. “As Far As I Could See…” is a series of digital landscapes that illustrates this aimless sense of wandering merged with solitude. At times, the sensation seems almost symphonic.

When left to silence and to our own devices, our minds tend to wander, losing their ability to focus. “…The Things I Never Said” and “These Are My Letters…Forever & Ever” are companion pieces arranged as still-lifes. Wishes that go unspoken are often the most unsettling. Each sculpture is elegantly engraved with passages of text indicating the significance of the series, encased in vintage glass inkwells and bottles that contain 3D-printed quills and scrolls of letters.

Resembling washed-up debris in the shape of neon lights, this installation sits motionlessly against a wall, reminding us of the outside forces one cannot control, like a tide that cannot cease. We accept all potential by allowing ourselves to ease into life’s cadence.

Investigating loss and finding catharsis, “It’s Not A Lot…But It’s Something” are diptych sculptures lathered in electromagnetic chrome, resembling a couple of oversized dessert jellies. Galvanized by its exterior shell, these amorphous beings are captured in stasis like a memory frozen in time.

Much like the spirit of a celestial star, once a starfish becomes deceased, its body ceases to exist as a whole, transforming itself by releasing its physical form. Resisting the longing to calcify, “This Is Where I Wish To Be…” are a series of sculptures plated in electromagnetic chrome and embellished with candy to conceal their diminishment in size, preparing to celebrate the next phase of their journey.
