3RD SANTORINI BIENNALE
International biennale @ Santorini (GREECE)


The Santorini Biennale is inspired by the ways in which ideas are born and disseminated – how they then develop and diversify within our increasingly interconnected global society.

Art and culture continue to play a distinctive role in defining and re-examining the past, understand the present and imagine the future direction of human endeavour. In recognition of this, the Santorini Biennale wishes to cultivate a spirit of research and experimentation; also, to present an environment ideal for open and continuous dialogue.

Pursuing a programme of cultural collaboration that is at the same time both regional and international, The Santorini Biennale intends to support and promote the free exchange of both artistic and cultural experience.

Reflecting the strengths of co-operation across all borders, encouraging and rewarding excellence, Santorini Biennale will work to advance a broad framework of activities enabling participants to initiate a wider dialogue for new ideas and social change. Ideally, by our art, we can provoke and motivate humanity to take action on today’s fundamental issues.

This year’s Biennale is entitled “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Who is Alice, where is Wonderland and what is the Wonder?”, with Alice living in a world where things are no longer what they used to be, and morality being derided. So, what does Alice do? Is Alice an individual that lives with no strings attached, and able to shape her personality and environment? As Kikos Papadopoulos says, a more in-depth artistic study of our lifestyle, tradition and way of thinking can lead to new ways of living and to different perceptions and rational. Art and culture unite, in an attempt to reassess the past, comprehend the present and imagine the future, through a multi-disciplinary exhibition that contains and communicates a wealth of cultural messages that may shape what’s in store for us.

AFTER EDEN
Group exhibition @ Latarka Galeria - Budapest (HUNGARY)



"I think I understand what you're driving at", said Redgrave; "you mean, I suppose, that this world is something like Eden before the fall..." - Honeymoon in Space, George Griffith, 1900.

Here lie scenes and objects from another point in time. Whether they are from the past or the future is not evident. Is this the aftermath of the un-checked human impact on the Earth? Some dystopian premonition? A warning? Is this Earth? There is what appears to be a time machine, or a space craft, it's not clear. These objects may be the archive of findings brought 'back' from it's travels, or perhaps we are standing at it's final destination, in a place or time distant to our own.

The planet Venus has been a constant source of inspiration to mankind throughout history; both mythical and scientific. It has kept it’s mystery with it’s thick covering of cloud that could not be penetrated by telescope. Up to the 1960's before the Venera missions of Soviet Russia, visions of Venus's surface in both popular and scientific communities ranged from Carboniferous swamplands to arid deserts, to vast oceans of carbonated water. In earlier 20th century England, Christian Victorians wondered if there were also people there, and if so, had Christ visited, and suffered for their sins too? All of these romances were brought to an end when the first probe landed and sent back the message: Venus is hell. Those thick clouds were not raining seltzer, but sulphuric acid. The atmosphere was so dense, and the surface temperatures so hot, that the probe was destroyed within the hour.

Venus has commonly been called Earth's twin. Relatively speaking in it's size, mass and gravity, Venus has much in common with Earth. In spite of it being closer to the Sun, Venus would not be significantly hotter than the Earth due to those thick clouds reflecting much of the Sun's heat. Venus's scorching temperature and uninhabitable terrain actually come from a runaway greenhouse effect.

In the face of what we now know about the threats of global warming on our own planet, Griffith's character's supposition could be applied to Earth today, rather than a mythical Venus of the past. Could Venus be a vision of Earth's distant future, left unchecked? Venus: our evil twin; a stark warning against the dangers of neglecting our better judgement for the sake of short-term convenience.

9TH SHIRYAEVO BIENNALE
International biennale @ Samara Art Museum - Samara (RUSSIA)



The 9th Shiryaevo Biennale is the largest authentic contemporary art event in the Samara Region held by the Central Volga Branch of National Centre for Contemporary Arts (NCCA) under support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of the Samara Region.

Organized in 1999 it has become one of the brands of contemporary art in Russia. The main project of the Biennale is to realize a creative laboratory with an obligatory 'staying' in the locals' houses and a Nomadic Show resulting in a one-day final exhibition-tour with locals and visitors.

"The Nomadic Show" is a symbiosis of two concepts: the European - the 'show' and the Asian - 'nomadic' life of the nomadic principle for the development of new territories. "The Nomadic Show" is the central event of the Biennale. The action takes place for only one day and involves the work of all the artists. Each participant or creative team has a personal time for the presentation. To be there, the majority of spectators come from Samara on a special ship. The 'horde' of spectators move on the proposed route, along with authors, media and local people, learning all the new centers of art and engaging in the procession.

The subject of the 2016 Biennale - Cash - reveals the conflict between a wish to create a relationship of trust between each other and to survive under new conditions of total market networks. Within the framework of the declared subject it is planned to define a sphere of real authentic human values appropriate for everybody - in small local places and in the global situation of today.

Art Stage Jakarta, Indonesia’s first boutique art fair of international format celebrates the country’s vibrant and diverse contemporary art scene.

As Southeast Asia’s largest art scene and market, Indonesia is defined by its unique artists and a strong collecting culture led by the nation’s dedicated collectors.

Art Stage Jakarta 2016 will present 50 galleries from Indonesia and beyond. GLOBAL VILLAGE
Group exhibition @ ArtZaanstad - Zaandam (THE NETHERLANDS); City Center Landshut - Landshut (GERMANY); Kulturhuset Brønden - Brøndby Strand (DENMARK).



When the idea for Global Village came to light in 2009 we did not foresee that it would become such a success resulting in exhibitions throughout Europe. Global Village started from the wish to meet artists from every part of the globe and the wish to create an exhibition for the public at large. The name refers to the global village that the world has become on the internet.

In order to create a contemporary art exhibition that the public can relate to, we house Global Village in locations that have a lower art-feel. Locations where the public feels free to enter. Those locations can be fully indoors or partly in the open air. Guided tours are provided by the artists during each exhibition so the public has the opportunity to meet with the artists.

At each exhibition we aim to show many forms of contemporary art from every part of the world; paintings, sculptures, installation art, video art, performances, objects, new media, photography, digital art and street art. By showing quality art that is easy to relate to in combination with more conceptual art we create an approachable exhibition which can be enjoyed by everyone; the art-lover as well as the art-novice. The guided tours form an important tool to get the public to relate to the conceptual art as well as to the more easily appreciated works.

Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, head-curator dOCUMENTA 13, made an interesting and quite radical move to not follow a curatorial concept, but rather to engage in what she describes as “conducting and choreographing manifold materials, methods and knowledges.” Christov-Bakargiev focused on the important connection of the art world to the social network and digital media: “In an art world dominated by the curatorial, to act without a predefined curatorial plan offers a possibility to both repeat the network of connectivity of the digital age, while also reflecting on its shortcomings and implications from a critical viewpoint.”

Global Village follows this bold move. As it aims for artists from different countries and backgrounds, it feels strange to let a curator dictate the viewpoint. The name Global Village refers to the internet and on the internet there is no authority. When artists are free to express themselves without restrictions, the public will get a broader perspective on today’s world. Selection of the art will be made, based on its quality and not its viewpoint. Therefore Global Village will remain themeless.

VISCERAL
Two-person exhibition @ Wolo Bukit Bintang - Kuala Lumpur (MALAYSIA)



Wolo Bukit Bintang & Wei-Ling Gallery presents VISCERAL, by Indian artist Jinal Patel & Australian artist Thomas C. Chung.

Exploring the narrative of emotions through sculptures, mixed media and installations, this exhibition represents a longing for the purest of connections. When something is 'visceral', in a figurative sense, you 'feel it deep down' - both artists share this mutual undertone beneath their works.

Patel's use of soil and performance is a multi-sensory piece, reflecting her interests in femininity and the natural world. Chung's soft sculptures and video installation reflect a child's perspective in exploring the world, echoed through its colour and form.

Their exploration of the environment is inviting an audience to freely explore. Walking through the ebb and flow of each artists' practice, it is their intention that a synergy is formed between the artwork and its viewer.  
 
The world is slowly telling us its stories - will we truly listen to it?

WOLO BUKIT BINTANG
Artist's residency @ WOLO Bukit Bintang - Kuala Lumpur (MALAYSIA)


The WOLO Artist Residency is located in the prestigious WOLO Bukit Bintang Hotel in the Golden Triangle of Kuala Lumpur. The 4-Star boutique hotel combines Malaysia's heritage of culture and arts with high-class design elements. Embodying the exuberance of Kuala Lumpur, the space is vibrating with the area's historic charm and energy, mixed with urban and contemporary influences.

The residency is a collaboration between the WOLO Bukit Bintang Hotel and the renowned art gallery Wei-Ling Gallery. The residency is aimed at international artists who apply for the space through a proposal. Selected artists will be invited to come to Kuala Lumpur and spend two months in this bustling city, while the practice can be in any discipline (paint, photography, video, light or sculpture). The project should remain true to the artist's body of work.

The objective of the residency is for international artists to live and work in the center of Kuala Lumpur for two months to realise a project that draws on the identity of Malaysia.

As the residency is situated in a boutique hotel in the middle of the Bukit Bintang district in Kuala Lumpur, the project should be community based and must result in at least one finished work of art which will eventually find its permanent home in the hotel/development. The famous Petronas Twin Towers and numerous cultural hotspots are just a walk away from the artist residency.

SETUP CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR

SetUp Art Fair is a contemporary art fair which focuses attention on emerging artists. The name SetUp indicates the intentions of the project, “to organise processes for the subsequent start-up of an establishment”; the challenge is to set up a new process to rethink the art establishment.

The SetUp format is designed to help the three key figures of the contemporary art establishment interact: artist, curator-critic, gallery owner, this is why we ask exhibitors to present a curatorial project with at least one artist under 35 introduced by a critical essay by a curator under 35. SetUp nurtures the dynamism of research presenting itself as a cultural platform.

Every year there are talks, round tables and editorial presentations organised to provide the opportunity to hear about the most interesting experiences on the contemporary art scene; there is open comparison between professionals with space for a performative exhibition and for other forms of expression; the projects of individual artists who have the tenacity to let themselves be questioned will be evaluated within the Special Project section.

Why do we do all this?

In order to provide new horizons, in order to generate a virtuous short circuit between trade and culture, in order to increase the potential of the exhibition, in order to provide wide-ranging satisfaction to the public’s fascination with art and above all because we believe in the real possibility of creating a healthy “culture economy”.
